Contact Lens Exams

Many people prefer contacts over glasses to correct refractive errors. The main reason people prefer contacts is that they provide a natural appearance. In addition, your vision won't be obscured by an eyeglass frame or dirty lenses. Many athletes prefer contacts because they are more convenient than wearing sports goggles. If you are considering getting contacts, our professionals at Bay Ridge Family Eye Care in Brooklyn can perform a contact lens exam to fit you with the right pair.

Eye Exam

Our optometrists will perform an eye exam different from your routine exam. We will perform special tests, starting with taking measurements of the eye's surface to determine the best type of contacts and the size that will work best for you. Our optometrists can also determine what prescription you need for contact lenses. Your eyeglasses sit about 12 millimeters from your eyes, and contacts sit directly on the eyes. Therefore, your eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions won't be the same.

Choosing the Lenses

Unless you have a condition that makes you require hard-to-fit contacts, you can wear conventional soft lenses. There are several types of soft contacts to choose from, based on your lifestyle and the time you have to care for the lenses.

  • Daily lenses are worn once and thrown away before bed, and you will put a fresh pair in each day.
  • Weekly lenses are thrown out after a week, and you will put on a fresh pair.
  • Bi-weekly lenses are thrown out after two weeks before putting on a fresh pair.
  • Monthly lenses are worn for a month before putting on a fresh pair.
  • Extended-wear lenses can be worn for 30 days without needing to remove them at night.
  • Colored lenses can change the color of your eyes to brown, hazel, blue, green, aqua, and purple.

Our eye doctors will discuss your options during the contact lens exam, helping you choose the most convenient lenses for your lifestyle.

Contact Lens Teaching

When our optometrists have determined your prescription and the correct size lenses, we will give you a trial pair of lenses to wear for a week or two to ensure they are comfortable and you can see clearly. Before you can leave the office with the contacts, a technician will sit down with you to ensure you know how to insert, remove, and care for the lenses. We will also teach you how to care for the contacts to ensure they last and avoid potential eye infections.
